This season for the Stripers, Lee’s appeared in 34 games and thrown 45 2/3 innings while pitching to a 2.17 ERA, 0.766 WHIP. Jake briefly mentioned Lee’s good start at Gwinnett back in May since that report, he’s improved. He looks pretty good in the Tweet below.Ĭlutch strikeout, /XzqlyXF8CM- Fish Stripes March 2, 2021 Baseball America’s draft report had his fastball at 94 back in 2016, so I expect the 92mph mentioned by Fish Stripes early in the spring. Lee is a 6’- 3, 214-pound lefty, who the folks over at Fish Stripes say featured a four-seamer fastball, changeup, and curveball pitch mix this spring. The Braves signed Lee on April 15 and assigned him to Gwinnett. Lee didn’t pitch in 2020, and with the Marlin minor league system flush with young power arms, they released the then 26-year-old reliever on March 29. With AAA New Orleans, Lee threw 15 innings over eight games, posting a 3.00 ERA while striking out 18 and holding batters to a. He began the 2019 season with 32 AA games, throwing 37 2/3 innings at a 2.15 ERA, 0.909 WHIP earning himself a promotion to AAA in August. He moved swiftly through the system that season, throwing 62 innings over 44 games while pitching to a 1.74 ERA, 0.968 WHIP. The Marlins selected Lee in the 10th round of the 2016 draft out of Cal State Fresno, where he’d appeared in 42 games and pitched to a 4.29 ERA in 86 innings over five starts and 37 relief appearances, and earned six saves.Īfter initially using him as a starter, the Marlins moved him to the pen full-time in 2018. As regular readers know, I’ve lobbied for Lee’s addition to the bullpen for a while, as he’s been pitching very well at Gwinnett. The Atlanta Braves announced that Dylan Lee is joining the pen to replace Santana. I’m not sure that’s the best course of action, but I think the Braves are definitely regretting not adding a more proven veteran to the mix, and now it appears to be too late.Thursday morning, the Atlanta Braves announced that Edgar Santana went on the paternity list, and sadly Touki Toussaint went on the bereavement list. Braden Shewmake has emerged as a legitimate candidate to make the Opening Day roster, and the Braves could want to allow Grissom to build up some confidence in AAA before throwing him into the fire. Regardless, this situation isn’t as clear-cut as it seemed coming into camp. His ability defensively at the position is concerning, but he’s head and shoulders ahead of Shewmake with the bat, and I don’t think Grissom has done anything to lose the job in Spring Training, unless there is something going on behind closed doors that we’re not seeing. It is peculiar that the Braves kept him out of the lineup for five consecutive games, but he’s back starting at shortstop today against the Rays. In my opinion, Grissom remains the leader in the clubhouse for the starting shortstop job. If he ends up being the starting shortstop for the Braves on Opening Day, it will make Alex Anthopoulos look very foolish for not adding a starting caliber shortstop to the roster over the offseason. Shewmake may be ready for major-league baseball defensively, but the last two seasons have painted a picture of who he is offensively. Those numbers did improve quite a bit last season with the Stripers, but he still left a lot to be desired, hitting. Despite looking competent offensively so far in Spring Training, Shewmake has been far from it since joining the upper levels of the minors. He’s better than Grissom in that area, but he leaves much to be desired at the plate. But with Grissom not playing shortstop for a fourth straight day on Saturday, I’ll follow the clues and trust my gut.īowman’s analysis is correct in regard to Shewmake’s defensive ability. He might benefit from another month or two of at-bats at the Triple-A level. The former first-round pick from 2019 wasn’t even on the radar following another lackluster performance on the farm in 2022, but there’s hype surrounding Shewmake now, and MLB.com’s Mark Bowman has him making the Opening Day roster as the team’s starting shortstop over Vaughn Grissom.Ĭhoosing between Shewmake and Grissom feels like picking a No. However, one thing I don’t think anybody could have predicted coming into the season is Braden Shewmake making the Opening Day roster. There have been a number of shocking developments for the Braves during Spring Training, some good and some bad.
